Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Zakat

Who must pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory on every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold for one complete lunar year. The wealth must be fully owned and in excess of basic needs.

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold — 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver at current market prices. Values shown are updated in real-time. Many scholars recommend the silver Nisab to help more recipients.

When should I pay Zakat?

Zakat becomes due after possessing wealth above Nisab for one lunar year. Many Muslims pay during Ramadan for increased blessings, but it can be paid anytime once due.

Is water a Zakat-eligible cause?

Yes. Providing clean water falls under Zakat-eligible categories including helping the poor and general welfare. Clean water is fundamental to health and economic opportunity.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

WOH Canada's CRA charitable registration is currently pending. Until it's approved we cannot issue tax receipts, and we say so plainly. Once approved, donations from the registration year onward will be eligible.
